Balayage by Joseph Bennett

The beautiful balayage to the right was done by Joseph Bennett, over at YGallery Salon in SoHo. Joseph is my new main hair stylist here in the city now, and has been since Summer of last year. Most people lighten their hair for the Summer time, so I do the opposite and go light for the Fall.

Of course, I can go to anyone anywhere for a blowout, but I don’t trust just anyone to cut or color my hair. Notice there’s only a few featured stylists on the blog? Yea, there’s a reason for that. I’m sure all stylists have the ability to cut, color, and style hair, but not all stylists can do it effortlessly and have you walking out of the salon with a look you love every single time.

From the second I met Joseph, I could tell that this was going to work out long term, simply from his hair intel. When Joseph came and greeted me at the door at my first appointment, he could already tell that I had a relaxer in my hair, as well as some residual color at the ends of my hair from awhile back. Every stylist should ask these questions anyway, regardless of whether or not they can tell just by looking, because that knowledge helps to decide what products to use on a client’s hair.

Moving onto the wash and blowout, Joseph gave a therapeutic scalp massage during my conditioning treatment, which is divine after a long day at work. And as for the blowout, nothing annoys me more than a stylist trying to rush through my thick head of hair, leaving me with a frizz ball less than an hour later. Joseph took his time to pre-dry and section out my hair for the blowout, and actually finished rather quickly.

I had my hair lightened before, but never really knew what color goes best with my complexion, so I dug up lots of pictures from Instagram and Pinterest to show Joseph before my appointment. We decided on a color together, Joseph tested out a few strips of my hair, applied color and toner, and here we are to a nice blonde-ish/caramel balayage that blends perfectly with the rest of my dark brown hair.

Knowing my busy schedule, I’ll never have time to color my hair on a schedule, so I loved that Joseph didn’t color so close to my roots. Otherwise, growing my hair out wouldn’t look so natural, in terms of my color.

*P.S.- I’m terrible with describing colors, so don’t quote me on caramel.
