My Favorite Detox Tea

It’s nothing fancy, but here’s the recipe for my favorite detox tea. It’s basically a combo of honey, fresh squeezed citruses, and hot water.

Timing is everything

When it comes to cleansing or detoxing, timing is very important. Decide on a schedule that works for you because consistency will be key for a successful a good cleansing detox. Whether you’re cleansing in the AM or PM, try to enjoy your detox tea on an empty stomach for optimal results. According to Mind Body Green, drinking juices and detox teas on an empty stomach allows your body to absorb nutrients much quicker than when you’re full.

The Detox Cleanse

When it comes to a basic tea like this, I just can’t get enough. For what I consider a “full detox,” drink this citrusy concoction both in the AM & PM, using whole citrus fruits to make the tea each time. Add as much honey as you’d like for the sake of flavor, but don’t go overboard. And if you can get your hands on some raw honey from your local farm, that’s even better.

If starting slow or citrus flavors are just too tart, you can either go all-in once per day or just cut the list of ingredients in half for two detox drinks daily. Depending on how busy I am, it ends up being the full detox at night, except for Sundays when I go “all-in” twice.

The Recipe

Here are the ingredients you’ll need. Once you’ve decided on an ideal portion, cut your citrus in halves. If you’re going for the partial, store one-half of each citrus fruit in a jar or container away in the fridge. The other halves will be used to make your tea now. If you’re feeling a little extra, squeeze some juice from a lime. If you don’t have all of them, just substitute any citruses you have laying around the kitchen.

  • Lemon

  • Orange

  • Honey

  • Hot water

Get your water boiling, so it’s ready when your citrus juices and honey are in your favorite mug. I use an electric tea kettle to heat my water and a hand-held citrus squeezer, which are both from Food52. Squeeze the juice from each citrus half into the mug. Add a tablespoon of honey and once the water comes to a boil, pour the hot water into your mug with the rest of the ingredients. Now stir it up and enjoy your detox tea!
