Goosefeather: A Chinese Tapas Bar

Influenced by my cousin, Melissa, I checked out Goosefeather last weekend! This modern Cantonese restaurant reminded me of a Chinese tapas bar.

Everything from the venue to the property grounds to the food was decadent. It’s tucked away at The King Mansion in the Tarrytown House Estate in Westchester, New York. It might be a little confusing driving through, but just follow the signs for the mansion and you’ll be golden. But before you go, don’t forget to book a Resy!

The chef, Dale Tade, greeted guests upon arrival and it kinda gave me “The Menu” vibes, but in a good way. If his name rings a bell, it’s because I’ve been to his restaurant Rice & Gold at Hotel 50 Bowery in Chinatown for brunch about a million times. Unfortunately, this restaurant has since closed, but I’m so glad to see he continued creating eclectic Asian cuisine elsewhere.

The cocktails taste as great as they look! I got a head start at the bar since I arrived early — a rare occurrence. The Selfish cocktail had just the right touch of ginger for spice and pear for a sweet refreshing base. Yes, that garnish is basically a sugar-coated ginger chew, so just eat it.

Digital Get Down

 

If you’ve been following me long enough, you’ll know I love my whiskey! That being said, the Space Cowboy was my favorite cocktail. However, since it’s a seasonal cocktail, it may not be waiting for me next time. Melissa loves her tequila, so she had the Up Against The Wall. The Digital Get Down was seemingly light on the Bourbon, but it was fine considering I was already on round three.

Shared Plates

The chef really prides himself in serving food made with locally sourced ingredients and it really shows in the flavor of each dish. While the entrées are probably filling enough, I really recommend ordering a bunch of shared plates so that you can enjoy a little bit of everything. That being said, take a look at what my cousin and I shared for dinner!

 

Spicy Hamachi Tartare

Tea Smoked Salmon Crudo

 

The Spicy Hamachi Tartare was coated in a crispy layer of fried rice with a dollop of soy butter. For anyone who's on the fence when it comes to raw food, as far as texture goes, I couldn't even tell if it was uncooked. The Tea Smoked Salmon Crudo was delish! I had no hesitations in ordering this dish because I absolutely love truffles.

 

Dry-Aged Beef Potstickers

Potstickers are always a must for Asian apps, so as long as you’re not a vegetarian or anything, try out the Dry-Aged Beef Potstickers. Even though I used a fork because I hate eating with my hands at nice restaurants, the Kung Pao Chicken Wings were so tasty and had just the right amount of spice, so I went for it!

The “Supreme” Rice

 
 

The Supreme Rice was described as a "Land x Air x Sea Collaboration." I couldn't guess the three main ingredients, but our waitress confirmed there was chorizo, shrimp, and a poached duck egg in this rice dish.

 
 

Don’t forget to break up the duck egg and mix it in with the rest of the dish. If you hate soft yolk as I do, I promise you won’t even taste it once it’s all stirred in there. My favorite ingredient in this dish was the small chunks of pineapple. If you like pineapple fried rice from a Thai restaurant, you’d enjoy this dish.

After Dinner

We had Churros for dessert, which were coated in this amazing “Chinese Five Spice Sugar” and served with apple butter. And I love an espresso martini, but I found something new to try. The Celebrity cocktail was basically an Espresso Martini with banana liquor. Oddly enough, it reminded me of my morning coffee shake.

Bring Home a Taste of “Goosefeather”

 

I highly recommend checking out Dale Talde’s cookbook! It can be spotted on various mantles and bookshelves around the mansion.

In terms of how pricy this restaurant is, foodies should expect to drop about $150 per person. Normal diners would probably spend about half of a foodie, assuming you enjoy a cocktail with dinner.

Some Final Thoughts

The service was phenomenal! The wait staff, bartenders, and valet guys were super friendly and so helpful. I really felt taken care of every step of the way.

Goosefeather is a fully cashless establishment, but they basically accept most major credit cards. Tips can be paid in cash though, so I guess they’re not exactly 100% cashless.
